Shillong, Mar 24 : The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Purno Sangma has postponed his proposed hunger strike against President's rule in Meghalaya.

Sangma withdrew his proposed hunger strike, which he wanted to undertake from Tuesday.

The East Khasi Hills District Administration had imposed Section 144 in the district in view of a protest march proposed by some political party and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to protest against the President's rule in state.

The Congress is still waiting for the court verdict on the suspension of three other MLAs.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) President Donkupar Roy said that the MPA has decided to hold a rally to discuss the political situation in the state on Saturday.

The decision is now in the hands of the judiciary.

On March 19, after the Central Government's recommendation for President's rule in Meghalaya, President Pratibha Patil placed the State Assembly under suspended animation.

The Union Cabinet announced the decision after receiving a report from Meghalaya Governor R. S. Mooshahary about the constitutional machinery breaking down in Meghalaya.

Sangma termed the move unwarranted and unprecedented and declared that he would go on a fast unto death from March 24. (ANI)
