San Jose restaurant linked with Shigella outbreak gets approval to reopen

Around 200 people were sickened owing to Shigella outbreak happened in a San Jose restaurant. On Thursday, Santa Clara County health officials announced that Marisco has received approval to reopen its doors.

The Department of Environmental carried out re-inspection at the eating joint and later, allowed it to be reopened as it was confirmed that the place no more offers risk to public health from the infectious bacterial disease.

Since October 18, the restaurant was closed. According to county officials, the restaurant’s owners have taken pain and voluntarily threw out all the food products present at that place and then carried out a proper cleaning and sanitization process at the facility.

Tests were carried out on people who worked at the restaurant and those who tested negative for the infection were asked to return to the job. According to the officials, probable cause of the infection was an infected food handler at the restaurant.

However then also, exact source of the infection has not been confirmed. One of the eight employees working in the restaurant has been tested positive for the infection. Out of the 94 confirmed people who became sick with Shigella, 74 are in Santa Clara County, 11 in Alameda County, three in San Mateo County, three in Santa Cruz County and two in Merced County and one in Marin County.

It can take two days to develop the symptoms of Shigella that include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps and vomiting. These symptoms can be faced for five to seven days.
