Yuri Milner, the Russian Internet entrepreneur and founder of science giveaways like the annual $3 million Fundamental Physics Prizes, is going to spend at least $100 million in the next decade to help in the hunt for aliens. An announcement was made by Milner in London on Monday that he wants to extend his idea of philanthropy beyond the earth and make it possible to get signals from alien civilizations.

Milner said the money will empower the project Breakthrough Listen to embark on a tough stint of getting evidence of alien lives existing outside earth.

The quest known as the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, has so far made no or very little success to provide any significant proof for the existence of alien life.

However, the amount promised by Milner could help make a breakthrough in the field of alien science. Astronomers will be benefitted by the money as they would see the kinds of radar used for air traffic control from any of the closest 1,000 stars.

They will be able to detect a laser with the power output of a common 100-watt light bulb from the distance of the nearest stars. Moreover, they would observe time on some of the world's biggest radio telescopes. Dan Werthimer, a longtime SETI researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, said that he never imagined that such a miracle could happen.

"We have a responsibility to not stop searching. It should always be happening in the background. This is the biggest question. We should be listening", said Milner in an interview.
