Rise in Abortion Rates among Women in Early 30s
A new study has revealed the abortion cases are now increasingly seen in women in their early thirties. The abortion rates among those women are even higher than teenagers. Department of Health has revealed that most of them were unmarried but were sexually active with a partner. The findings of the study have showed that older women facing career stress are feeling the strongest pressure of getting rid of an unwanted child.
Laura Perrins, co-editor of the Conservative Woman website, said, "These figures are worrying and show how much pressure women are under both financially, career-wise and emotionally. It is a wake-up call".
Jill Kirby, an author and family commentator, said that the most concerning fact is higher rates of abortion in women who have not conceived by mistake or didn't have one-night stands. Many women feel the strong urge of having children, but then decide not to do so because of financial or relationship reasons.
In England and Wales last year, a total of 184,571 abortions were carried out. The positive of the study was a great fall in abortion rates among teens compared to a decade ago. The abortion rate was overall stable, with 184,571 procedures taking place in England and Whales.
Ann Furedi, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, said abortion is likely to be seen in 33% of women in her lifetime.
It has been learnt from the NHS figures that 837 women and girls traveled from Northern Ireland for abortion in 2014.
