Researchers Develop New Strain of Seaweed no less than Superfood
Researchers have developed a superfood, called Dulse. In reality, it is like seaweed, having twice nutritional value of kale. This particular plant, which has been patented by researchers from Oregon State University tastes like bacon.
Dulse is a form of edible seaweed, which grows quite quickly. It is found wild along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines. It is being used in dried form in cooking and also, as a nutritional supplement.
But the strain developed by the researchers is bit different, as it can be farmed and eaten fresh. For more than 15 years, the researchers were trying to develop a new form of strain. Original goal was not to come up with superfood option for humans.
Researchers wanted to develop superfood for commercially grown abalone. But when a product development team at OSU's Food Innovation Center created foods using the strain, they gave a thought about to extend its benefits for humans.
They newly developed strain is translucent red lettuce, and is full of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants and how can we forget that it is full of proteins. When it is friend then it tastes like bacon.
“Theoretically, you could create an industry in eastern Oregon almost as easily as you could along the coast with a bit of supplementation. You just need a modest amount of seawater and some sunshine”, affirmed OSU researcher Chris Langdon, who has developed the strain.
