New details emerge in Polish village incest case

Warsaw - New details emerged on Tuesday in an incest case which has shocked Poland.

A 45-year-old man, who was arrested on Monday, has been charged with repeatedly raping his daughter over a period of six years, and with imprisoning her during that time.

Details of the charges emerged which appeared to temper the original reporting of the case after national media had labelled the man as the "Polish Josef Fritzl," referring to the Austrian incest case which came to light in April.

Media reports Monday had suggested the woman - identified only as Alice as her last name was withheld in accordance to Polish law - was held captive for six years until she reported the abuse last week.

Polish journalists detained in South Ossetia

Warsaw  - A Polish television crew was detained in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia on Monday and had their equipment confiscated, local media reported.

A reporter and cameraman from Polish Television, along with their Georgian driver, were stopped by Ossetian police before being turned over to Russian soldiers, the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported. Their equipment - including their mobile phones - were also confiscated.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that if required he would intervene in Moscow and Tbilisi on the matter.

The Polish Journalists' Association also sent a letter of protest to Russia's ambassador in Poland, asking for an explanation for the detention.

Warsaw - A 45-year-old man was arrested Monday in eastern Poland on suspicion of imprisoning his daughter for six years and raping her repeatedly.

Polish cardinal wants Virgin Mary as patron of European Parliament

Cardinal Jozef Glemp first raised the idea in August, but now the proposal is also slated to be presented to the Commission of Episcopates of the European Union, the daily says.

The Virgin Mary last year became the patron of the Polish parliament, in a move that got wide support from both left- and right-wing politicians.

Activists urge Poland to ban cluster munitions

cluster munitions bombWarsaw - Activists from a human rights organization have urged Poland to ban cluster munitions, the daily Polska reported on Thursday.

A petition has been sent to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, asking him to subscribe to the Oslo Process and ban the controversial weapon, said Adam Bodnar of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights.

Responding to Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski, who the daily quoted as saying cluster bombs are "not so oppressive," Bodnar said "these are irresponsible words in the light of the international process" to ban the munitions.
