Black wolves’ coat coloration is a gift from dogs

Washington, February 6: An international group of researchers have unravelled the mystery as to why nearly half of North American wolves have black coats, while European wolves are overwhelmingly grey or white.

The team - comprising biologists and molecular geneticists from Stanford University, UCLA, Sweden, Canada and Italy - say that the black coats are the result of historical mating between black dogs and wild grey wolves.

The National Science Foundation-funded study, appearing in the online edition of the journal Science, involved molecular genetic techniques to analyse DNA sequences from 150 wolves in Yellowstone National Park, which covers parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

Astronomers spot ‘cosmic dust fountain’

Washington, Feb 6 : A team of astronomers has literally spotted a `cosmic dust fountain' in the far reaches of space, which is namely a double-star system that displays all the characteristics that are associated with dust production.

The system was found by York, the University of Toledo's Adolf Witt, and their collaborators.

The double star system, designated HD 44179, sits within what astronomers call the Red Rectangle, an interstellar cloud of gas and dust (nebula) located approximately
2,300 light years from Earth.

One of the double stars is of a type that astronomers regard as a likely source of dust. These stars, unlike the sun, have already burned all the hydrogen in their cores.

Pygmies of Western Central Africa share recent common ancestors

Washington, Feb 6 : In a new study, scientists have found that despite their great cultural, physical, and genetic diversity, pygmies of Western Central Africa diverged from a single ancestral population just about 2,800 years ago.

The new study is the first to reconstruct the history of the numerous forest-dwelling pygmy populations, who make their livings as hunter-gatherers, and their immediate sedentary, agriculturalist neighbors, according to the researchers.

"The common origin of all pygmy populations from Western Central Africa is de facto assumed by the use of the generic term `pygmy'," said Paul Verdu of Musee de l'Homme in Paris.
