Novel nanotechnology paves way for effective anti-superbug drugs

London, Oct 13 : Scientists at the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) at UCL are using a new nanomechanical approach to study the mechanism whereby an antibiotic called vancomycin can effectively combat increasingly resistant infections, such as MRSA.

Research leaders Dr Rachel McKendry and Professor Gabriel Aeppli have revealed that they have developed ultra-sensitive probes that can help increase the understanding of how antibiotics work.

They say that the new technology can pave the way for the development of more effective new drugs.

Computers still not quite clever enough to fool humans

London, Oct 13: Six computers have been unable to pass a major artificial intelligence test that involved holding a conservation with a person, thus indicating that computers are still not quite clever enough o fool humans.

According to a report in the Telegraph, the test, known as the Turing test, tested six machines to see if they could pass themselves off as humans in text-based conversations with people.

Although two machines came close to imitating a real-time “chat”, the Turing Test has not been passed.

The Turing test, developed by British mathematician Alan Turing in 1950, is a proposal for a test of a machine’s ability to demonstrate intelligence.

Fathers can pass on hair loss genes to sons

Fathers can pass on hair loss genes to sonsLondon, Oct 13 : A team of scientists from Bonn and Dusseldorf Universities has identified “hair loss” genetic variants that can be passed from a father to his son.

The same research team had discovered the first hair-loss gene inherited through the maternal line in 2005, explaining why hair-loss in men often reflects that of their maternal grandfathers.

However, the new study holds fathers responsible for hair loss in men.

Genetic variants that put men at sevenfold risk of baldness identified

London, Oct 13: An international team of researchers has found that two genetic variants that may put men at a sevenfold increased risk of male pattern baldness.

Male pattern baldness is the most common form of baldness, where hair is lost in a well-defined pattern beginning above both temples, and results in a distinctive M-shaped hairline.

In the study conducted over Caucasians, researchers at McGill University, King''s College London and GlaxoSmithKline Inc have identified two previously unknown genetic variants on chromosome 20 that can significantly raise the risk of male pattern baldness.
