Olympic champion Greis wins Biathlon World Cup opener Ostersund, Sweden  - Germany's Michael Greis won the opening men's Biathlon World Cup race of the season Wednesday, a 20-kilometre race in Ostersund.

Greis missed just one target in the shooting range to claim victory in a time of 58 minutes 52.5 seconds to register the 10th World Cup victory of his career.

Norway's Alexander Os made two shooting mistakes on his way to a second place finish, 50.5 seconds behind the winner, with compatriot and world champion Emil Helge Svendsen third, 55 seconds behind Greis.

Saab director: General Motors to sell off Swedish unit Stockholm/Detroit - Ailing US carmaker General Motors (GM) could be planning to sell off its Swedish subsidiary Saab, Saab's deputy director Frederick Henderson told Stockholm's SR radio station Wednesday.

Henderson said GM was looking to resolve its financial troubles as quickly as possible, and a sell-off of Saab was one of several options.

GM bought shares in Saab in 1990 and has been the sole shareholder since 2000.

GM asked the US government for 18 billion dollars in credit on Tuesday to avoid going bust.

Paralympic champion Jonas Jacobsson wins prestigious Swedish award

Jonas-JacobssonStockholm - Jonas Jacobsson, who won three shooting medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games, was Tuesday elected winner of the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal, one of Sweden's most prestigious sports awards.

Jacobsson was cited for a "heroic come from behind" and was "a true marksman," the jury said.

The 43-year-old athlete, who is paralysed from the waist down, set a world record in the first shooting event - the men's 10-metre air rifle standing competition.

"This really feels like a true recognition as an athlete," Jacobsson told the online edition of Svenska Dagbladet.

Sweden wins World Cup of Golf

SHENZHEN, China,  Nov. 30 -- Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson combined to shoot 9-under-par 63 Sunday, helping Sweden bag a four-stroke win at the World Cup of Golf in Shenzhen, China.

Sweden completed the event at 27-under 261, and won it for the first time since 1991.

Sunday's format was foursomes or alternate shot.

"It's a great honor to play for your country, and obviously even better when you win," Stenson said. "Sweden only won it once before in 1991 so it was about time that we changed that."

Spain, a co-leader with Australia after Saturday's third round, got 2-under 70 from Miguel Angel Jimenez and Pablo Larrazabal and was the runner-up at 24-under 264.

Police say driver of stolen car was 11

BALSTA, Sweden, Nov. 30 -- An 11-year-old Swedish boy who tried to flee police, first in a stolen car and then on foot, was run down by a police dog.

Police flagged the car down in Balsta, north of Stockholm, late Friday, The Local reported. After officers discovered the car had been reported stolen and ordered the driver and three other young people out, the boy tried to drive away but was halted by a road barrier.

A tracker dog brought down the boy and a 14-year-old girl. Both children were treated at a local hospital for injuries inflicted by the dog and released to their parents.

Two other passengers have been identified by police as ages 14 and 15. Only the 15-year-old is old enough to face criminal charges.
