Russia nuclear chief in Iran to inspect joint power plant

Tehran  - Russia's nuclear energy chief visited Iran to inspect the progress of the joint nuclear power plant at the port city Bushehr in southern Iran, the news network Khabar reported Wednesday.

Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's federal nuclear energy agency, and his Iranian counterpart Gholam-Reza Aqazadeh went to Bushehr to get acquainted with the latest developments at the plant, Khabar said.

Iran's Atomic Energy Organization said last week that Kiriyenko and Aqazadeh would attend an initial test of the controversial plant, which has already suffered from a number of delays.

Regional development minister Viktor Basargin said 33.2 billion rubles (923 million dollars) would be stripped from the 49.8-billion--rubles construction budget for the firm Olympstroi in 2009.

He made the comments to Russian Prime Minster Vladimir Putin during a meeting on sports.

Moscow - French retailer Carrefour will bid for a majority stake in Russian supermarket chain Seventh Continent, a Russian newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed banker close to the deal.

Serena Williams continues to top women's tennis rankings

Serena eyeing payback from the unforgiving chair Hamburg - American Serena Williams remains top of a virtually unchanged women's tennis rankings issued Monday by the WTA ruling body.

Williams leads the rankings with 9,982 points followed by Russia's Dinara Safina on 9,021.

Sister Venus Williams moves up one place to fifth, leapfrogging Russian Vera Zvonareva while Ana Ivanovic of Serbia is also up one spot to seventh.

India to become fourth nation to build its own aircraft carrier

India aircraft carrierNew Delhi, Feb 23 : Taking a step ahead in the modernisation of the Navy, India will become the fourth country in the world to build its own aircraft carrier or air defence ship (ADS) after the United States, Russia and France.

Defence Minister A. K. Antony will lay the keel for country's first indigenous aircraft carrier on February 28 at the Cochin shipyard in Kerala. The ADS will give a major boost to the indigenous defence industry and make the Navy a pure Blue Water Navy.

The Russian team of Svetlana Sleptsova, Anna Boulygina, Olga Medvedzeva and Olga Zaitseva clocked 1 hour 13 minutes 12.9 seconds without any penalties to beat Germany by 1:15.1, with France third, 1:27.5 behind the Russian team.

Russia's accuracy on the shooting range was decisive and Zaitseva was able to cross the line triumphantly carrying the Russian flag in a comfortable victory.
