Pakistan tops in violence among South Asian countriesPeshawar, Aug 30 : Pakistan tops the list of South Asian countries having the worst law and order situation, according to statistics collected by a website.

At least 355 people were killed in 183 blasts during the first three months of 2008, while another 108 were killed in 112 blasts in the second quarter. Around 129 bombs went off during the months of July and August, claiming around 156 lives, The News reports.

Top Taliban commander killed in SwatPeshawar, Aug 27: Pakistan security forces claimed to have killed a top Taliban commander in Swat last evening, though a spokesman for the extremist organisation maintained that he died when his pistol misfired.

Security officials said that Ikramuddin, a close associate of Baitullah Mehsud, was killed following a clash in Chota Kalam area of Kabal tehsil, reported the Daily Times.

However, Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said Ikramuddin died accidentally when he fired his pistol.

Fazalur says it is difficult to keep coalition with PPP

PPL & PMLPeshawar, Aug 25 : Jamiaat-E-Ulemai Islam chief Fazalur-Rehman today said it is difficult to keep the coalition with the Pakistan People’s Party after its co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s remarks regarding PPP-PML-N agreements developed a new situation of non-trust.

He was talking to media persons during visit to relief camps set up in Peshawar.

Rehman expressed his concerns over remarks of Zardari about political agreements signed with the PML-N. It was his message to all political powers of the country, he commented.

Pak Army kills 50 Taliban militants in SwatPeshawar, Aug 24: Seventy-eight people were killed and several others injured as fierce clashes continued in different parts of the Swat Valley today.

The security forces launched their offensive late night on the alleged headquarters of Taliban militants. They used artillery and gunship helicopters to hit positions of the militants.

ISPR spokesman in Swat said that clashes between security forces and Taliban militants resulted in killing of 45-50 militants including a Taliban commander and foreign fighters in Tehsil Kabbal of Swat.
