Positive signals from Egypt-brokered talks, says Palestinian leader

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud AbbasNew Delhi - There were positive signals from talks brokered by Egypt with Palestinian factions, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in New Delhi Thursday.

Speaking to reporters at the conclusion of a four-day visit to India, Abbas also said a decision on elections in the Palestinian Territories - presidential and legislative - would be held after an Arab proposal based on the Egypt-brokered talks was made.

He said the proposal was expected by the end of October or early November.

India, Palestinian Authority take stock of Middle East peace process

Mahmoud AbbasNew Delhi - Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Tuesday underlined India's importance to the Middle East peace process as India promised is ongoing support and announced a 20-million-dollar assistance package.

"India is playing an important role in all fields (concerning Palestine), including the peace process ... We appreciate India's support," Abbas said.

In a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Abbas discussed issues related to the Middle East peace process, officials said.

India gifts embassy to Palestinian Authority, pledges 20 million dollar grant

palestinianNew Delhi, Oct 7 : In a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, India gifted a piece of prized real estate in the capital''s elite diplomatic enclave for building the embassy of the Palestinian National Authority and announced 20 million US dollars as budgetary support on Tuesday.

During a function organized at the ground of the proposed chancery-cum-residence complex at Chanakyapuri in Delhi, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh reiterated India''s unwavering solidarity and commitment to an independent Palestine.

Palestine Authority President meets PM

New Delhi, Oct 7 : Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here today to discuss the issues related to West Asia peace process.

Later, an agreement on the construction and equipping of a school in the name of Jawahara Lal Nehru in Abu Dees in Palestine was signed.

Earlier, speaking to reporters after his ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhawan this morning the visiting dignitary expressed gratitude to India for its steadfast support for the Palestinian cause.

He also laid the foundation stone of the Chancery-cum-Residence complex of the Embassy of Palestine, being built in New Delhi as a gift of the Government and the people of India.

Palestine President hails India''s role in West Asia peace process

New Delhi, Oct 7 : Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas today said that India had played a great role in West Asia peace process.

Speaking after the ceremonial reception and the guard of honour at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan, Abbas said the relations between India and Palestine have always been good and that the two countries are making efforts to improve the same.

"You know how good relations we have, between India and Palestine since great Indira Gandhi and great Yasir Arafat. And everyday, it''s improving. We are very glad with the help and the support of the Indian people to the Palestine," said Abbas.
