Kolkata JewellersKolkata, Nov. 26 (ANI): Kolkata''s jewellers are all smiles despite the global slowdown being suffered by markets across the world. The goldsmiths here didn’t shift to machine-made jewellery but adhered to their handmade process.

This decision, which was once believed as the main reason for their backwardness by several people, is today reaping them rich dividends.

When the US market was booming, jewellers in other parts of India and the world started mass production of low-carat gold jewellery, which was the craze in the United States. But now with the recession in the US there are no takers for that.

Rarity in Kolkata, women parking attendants

Kolkata, Nov. 25: As cars roll into the parking lot of the shopping mall off the Eastern Bypass in Kolkata, the drivers are met with women parking attendants, a rare sight in India.

These women guide the cars into the earmarked slots. They put on the parking tickets and even collect the money with great aplomb.

An initiative by the Sabita Swanirbhar Goshti, this parking attendants venture has provided gainful employment to 11 underprivileged women in the Santoshpur area.

The women were struggling to make ends meet when Goshti came up with the idea.

HC orders initiation of criminal proceedings against six BCCI officials

Board of Control for Cricket in IndiaAs per the Calcutta High Court order, criminal proceedings will be initiated against six BCCI officials - including the president, Shashank Manohar, and former president Sharad Pawar - for filing a false affidavit, in a case of alleged perjury involving Jagmohan Dalmiya's expulsion from the Indian board.

The remaining four Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials include Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty; former secretary Niranjan Shah; Secretary N Srinivasan; and junior Cricket Committee Chairman Chirayu Amin.

Trinamool leader and ex-Union Minister Ajit Panja dead

Ajit PanjaKolkata, Nov. 14 : Former Union Minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Ajit Panja died of cancer at a private hospital in Kolkata on Friday morning. He was 72 and is survived by his son and daughter.

Hospital sources said that Panja, who was admitted on October 26, breathed his last at 4.30 a. m.
