Nepal's Constituent Assembly to elect its chairman, vice chairman

Kathmandu, July 22: Nepal's Constituent Assembly (CA) will elect its chairman and vice chairman on Thursday.

The Constituent Assembly's acting chairman, Kul Bahadur Gurung, in a statement said that the election would begin at 11:00 a. m., adding that the candidates' proposals have to be registered on Wednesday.

In line with their understanding of electing Nepali Congress (NC) candidate as president, a Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) candidate as vice president and a Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) candidate as the CA chairman, the three parties are expected to back a UML candidate for the position.

Ram Baran Yadav to be sworn-in as Nepal''s first President tomorrow

Kathmandu, July 22 (ANI):Ram Baran Yadav to be sworn-in as Nepal''s first President tomorrow Nepali Congress (NC) candidate, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, will be sworn-in as the first President of the Republic of Nepal tomorrow.

The swearing ceremony will be held at Shital Niwas, the official residence of the President, at 3:00 p.m.

The Chief Justice of Nepal will administer the oath of office and secrecy to him. President Yadav will then administer oath of office to Vice President Paramananda Jha.

Kathamandu, July 22 : Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, who was elected as the first President of the Republic of Nepal, has said that his election as the head of the state is a victory of democracy.

Nepal assembly voting in presidential run-off

Kathmandu - Nepal's constituent assembly on Monday started voting in a run-off election to choose the country's first president. 

Voting began at 8 am (0215 GMT) with members queuing up to cast their ballot in a two-way contest between Maoist-backed Ramraja Prasad Singh and Nepali Congress candidate Ram Baran Yadav. 

Nepalese media predictions gave Yadav a slight edge in the voting. 

The election has split the two-and-a-half-year ruling alliance with the Maoists threatening to stay in opposition if their candidate loses. 

While the Maoists emerged as the biggest party in April's constituent assembly election, but with 220 seats, are well shot of a majority. 

Presidential run-off begins in Nepal

Kathmandu, July 21 : Presidential run-off begins in NepalThe run-off election for the Nepal President began here today as none of the candidates who contested in first presidential elections on Saturday could get the minimum votes required to get elected.

Nepali Congress (NC) candidate Ram Baran Yadav, an ethnic Madhesi leader who was widely expected to win Presidential poll in the 594-member Constituent Assembly, fell short of 15 votes to attain the magic figure of 298 votes.

Landslides, flash floods kill 11 in Nepal

Kathmandu  Landslides, flash floods kill 11 in Nepaland flash floods triggered by torrential monsoon rains across Nepal killed at least 11 people, media reports said Sunday.

In the worst incident, five people returning from work were killed when they were buried by landslide in Dhading district, just west of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, Kantipur newspaper said.

At least four others were injured in the accident while another man was killed when he was swept by flooded river in the district.
