Nepalese police break up anti-China demonstrations by Tibetans

Tibet - NepalKathmandu - Nepalese police on Thursday broke up anti-China protests by Tibetan exiles in Kathmandu and arrested more than 100 demonstrators, officials said.

The protest was the latest in a series of anti-China demonstrations by Tibetan exiles who are demanding greater political autonomy for Tibet and guarantees of human rights and religious freedom.

Prachanda to induct UML in GovernmentKathmandu, Aug 28 : Nepal’s Prime Minister Prachanda today said that he will initiate the process to expand his cabinet by inducting the ministers from Unified Marxist Leninist (UML).

The two party meeting is expected to resolve the conflict over the hierarchy in the Maoist-led government and to end the formation of the cabinet.

On Wednesday, Prachanda agreed to the UML''s demand during a meeting with senior UML leader Bam Dev Gautam.

Central Natural Disaster Rescue Committee meet begins

Kathmandu, Aug 28 : The Central Natural Disaster Rescue Committee (CNDRC) is meeting at Singha durbar today to formulate the plans for the reconstruction of breached Saptakoshi embankment, rehabilitation of the displaced and reconstruction of the damaged Highway.

Ministers and security personnel are participating in the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Prachanda.

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Dev Gurung said that the meeting will dwell on the short and long term solutions for preventing disaster.

Meanwhile, United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced today that it will provide the food for 15 days to the victims of Saptakoshi floods.

Thousands threatened by diseases after Nepal floodsathmandu - Thousands of people who fled their homes after floods caused by Koshi river in eastern Nepal are now threatened by epidemics, media reports said Thursday.

More than 40,000 people took shelter in government-run camps, about 5,000 of them were ill and at least two deaths were reported, Kantipur newspaper said.

"People in the camps are increasingly vulnerable to diarrhoea, pneumonia and high fever because of water contamination and lack of proper clothing and sanitation," the newspaper quoted police officers as saying.

Earlier, Sobhraj''s lawyers argued that there was no concrete evidence to convict him in the three-decade-old murder case.

Although 64-year-old Sobhraj, a French citizen, is being held for violating immigration laws, the Nepal Police have charged him with the murder of two backpackers, a Canadian and an American, in 1975.
