More than 10,000 people rally to protest economy in northern Greece Thessaloniki, Greece  - More than 10,000 people rallied in the Greek northern port city of Thessaloniki on Saturday to protest the poor state of the economy.

The demonstrators marched through the city just as Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was giving an annual speech on the economy and badly needed economic reforms at the site of an international trade fair where 2,000 police where deployed to contain any potential violence.

Greek Robin Hoods raid supermarket to protest rising prices

Thessaloniki, Greece - Greek anarchists raided a supermarket in the northern port city of Thessaloniki and handed out food for free in protest soaring consumer prices, reports said Friday.

About 50 unarmed robbers loaded up trolleys with pasta, milk and other products before storming out of the store without paying, shouting slogans against recent price hikes.

The masked gang then began distributing the stolen goods to people in the street, imitating a spate of similar robberies in grocery stores across Athens during the summer.

The robbers, most of them believed to be women, have never stolen money or hurt anyone in their actions.

French aid agency slams Greece over treatment of immigrants

Athens - Greece is detaining hundreds of illegal immigrants in cramped an squalid conditions at a reception center on the Mediterranean island of Lesvos, the French charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) charged Wednesday.

Some 800 immigrants, many of them from war-torn Afghanistan, are living in overcrowded rooms in the detention center without proper sanitation and medical care, according to the agency. Some are suffering from serious diseases.

"They do not have adequate access to showers and toilets," MSF local project leader Giorgos Karayiannis was quoted by the Greek daily Kathimerini as saying.

Greek police destroy bomb outside policy research institute Athens - Greek police destroyed a bomb which was set to go off outside a policy research institute which is affiliated with the European Union, reports said Tuesday.

The bomb outside the Economic and Social Council building near central Athens was destroyed by bomb squads.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving three calls by an unidentified individual. No-one claimed responsibility and officials said no-one was hurt.

Greek ship surfaces 2,500 years after sinking

GreekGela, Sicily  - An ancient Greek ship returned to surface Monday some 2,500 years after it sank in the Mediterranean Sea and two decades after its wreck was discovered by divers off Sicily.

Ship sirens wailed and Italian culture officials and other onlookers applauded as a crane lifted from the waters what remains of the 21-metre-long wooden vessel, the ANSA news agency reported.

The ship's 11-metre-long keel and part of the stern, both of which were preserved as the vessel lay buried for 25 centuries under clay below the sea floor, are to be transported to the Sicilian port of Gela.
