Sikhs celebrate Baisakhi in MalaysiaGeorge Town (Malaysia), Apr 13 : Sikhs living in Malaysia celebrated Baisakhi (New Year) at the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib.

Baisakhi is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar, celebrated in April every year.

The temple started celebrations a day early this year to enable those who were occupied with work or other commitments on the actual day to perform their prayers, The Star reported.

Malaysian practitioner defends yoga for Muslims

George Town (Malaysia), Oct 31 : A long-time yoga instructor has expressed shock and dismay over the views of a Malaysian lecturer who said that practicing yoga could cause Muslims to deviate from the teachings of Islam.

Datin Suleiha Merican, 56, who has been practicing yoga for the past 40 years, said the meditation technique is a science of health and had nothing to do with religion.

“When we are strong in our religion, why would we want to deviate? The professor’s statement is totally uncalled for,” she said.

Malaysian Fatwa Council to clarify stance over yoga soonGeorge Town (Malaysia), Oct 30 : The National Fatwa Council in Malaysia is expected to make its stance clear about Muslims practicing yoga soon, after a leading Muslim professor at a Malaysian University preached to his community men to shun yoga, saying that its origins could be tracked to Hinduism.

It is learnt that the matter had been discussed at the Council''s meeting in Kota Baru recently.

Malay Hindu NGOs protest costlier burials

George Town (Malaysia), Sept. 29 : A group of Hindu non-governmental organizations have handed over a memorandum to the state government protesting a sharp rise in fees for burial plots at a cemetery here.

According to a New Strait Times report, twelve NGOs claim the Hindu community had been left in a quandary after the Penang Hindu Endowment Board decided to charge RM 500 for plots at the Batu Lanchang Hindu cemetery.

To compound matters, the board also decided to impose renewal fees of RM 5,000, to be paid after 10 years.

Seri Delima assemblyman R. S. N. Rayer said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has promised to provide an amicable solution.
