The global slump is rearing its head on B-school campuses, including the IIM-B

The tidings for the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B), which will kick off the 2009 placement season on Friday, are not very good. If one is to go by the indications from other B-school campuses that are already into the process, it will be a tough placement season.

As colleges grapple with placements, students are busy re-working resumes and attending programmes on personality development and soft skills

With companies playing hard-to-get at campus placements, students from engineering and management colleges are re-working resumes to attract job offers.

"I've been going over my resume details, but don't feel confident that it will impress company officials. I've added information regarding the clubs on campus, which I joined and the various programmes we organised through the year. I hope that earns extra credit from the interviewer," says Abhijit Sabarwal, an engineering student.

Colleges are increasingly lending start-up capital to students wishing to start new ventures of their own

The incubation programmes in colleges have led students to start their own companies while studying. While some colleges are helping students with their initial capital investment, many others have programmes training them to set-up companies with zero capital. "We provide assistance to students, so that they become entrepreneurs, and not just employees," says Saket Jalan, chief mentor, Jain Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Operation drug

The city police have launched an operation to detect possible heroin peddling in the city. This is following the haul of heroin by the Customs on Friday night. The officers had seized 2.5 kg of heroin estimated at Rs8 crore from a Nigerian and his partner, a girl from Imphal.

"Until now, we had no information about heroin and cocaine making the rounds in the narcotic distribution circles within the city. We have been asked to look out for any possible peddlers in these narcotics by our seniors," assistant commissioner of police Omkariah (Women and Narcotics Squad) of Central Crime Branch of the city police, said.

A fast track court in the city is likely to pass its judgment on a two decade old road rage death case on March 3.

The accused in the case is Ashok Fernandez, son of former IAS officer and historian Praxie Fernandez. The case has been dragging on for the past two decades.

The First Fast Track Sessions Court judge Justice Savithri Vinayaka, who heard the case, has posted the judgment for March 3.

According to the prosecution, on January 11, 1990, Ashok, owner of a leading photo printing unit, allegedly shot at two motorcycle riders, Murali and his friend. While Murali died, his friend escaped with injuries.

She is accused of submitting false caste records and educational certificates

Bowing to opposition demand in the legislative council, the state government, on Wednesday, sacked Dr S Malini, assistant director of the Forensic Science Laboratory here, on charges of submitting fake documents that furnished wrong information about her caste, and educational qualification for joining the service.

Janata Dal (Seculer) leader MC Nanaiah, who raised the issue in the council, demanded the government to immediately sack Dr Malini from service.

He stated that Malini had not only submitted false caste records, but also fake certificates of educational qualification, including SSLC marks card.
