Western female aid worker shot dead in Afghan capitalKabul - Unknown gunmen killed a foreign woman when she was going to her office in the western part of capital Kabul on Monday, police said.

The attackers, who were riding on motorbike, fled the area following the shooting, said Zemarai Bashary, interior ministry spokesman.

Bashary declined to provide more information or identify the victim.

But a police official, who did not want to be named because he was not authorized to talk to news media, said the victim was from South Africa and worked with aid organization.

NATO claims more than 20 Taliban rebels killed in Afghanistan Kabul - NATO forces killed more than 20 suspected Taliban militants during a two-day operation in central Afghanistan, the alliance said in a statement Monday.

The insurgents were killed in combat supported by air assaults on Thursday in Wardak province, 60 kilometres west of Kabul.

A statement by NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said that the militants were pushed south from Jalrez to Nerkh district of the same province in the first engagement.

Suicide bomber targets Italian troops in Afghanistan

Italian Troops in AfghanistanKabul  - A suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a convoy of NATO-led forces in western Afghanistan on Saturday, wounding four soldiers, officials said Saturday.

The bomber attacked Italian troops near an airport on the outskirts of the capital of Herat province, regional police spokesman Abdul Raouf Ahmadi said.

"The bomber died in the attack, and one of the Italian military tanks was thrown out of the main road, because the blast was very powerful," Ahmadi said.

Tribal elder, 22 insurgents killed in attacks in Afghanistan

Kabul, AfghanistanKabul -  Gunmen killed a tribal elder and his son in an attack in southern Afghanistan, while elsewhere at least 22 insurgents were killed and eight others were detained in separate operations by Afghan and international forces, officials said Saturday.

Gunmen on motorbike shot Ali Ahmad Barekzai and his son as they were leaving a mosque in southern Kandahar's provincial capital on Saturday morning, said Zelmai Ayoubi, spokesman for the provincial governor.

Barekzai's son Gul Ahmad had served as Afghan President Hamid Karzai's bodyguard, and officials believed he could have been the prime target.

Car suicide blast wounds five NATO soldiers in Afghanistan

Kabul, Afghanistan, NATOKabul, Oct 18 : A suicide car bomb exploded outside a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) base at Heart in Afghanistan on Saturday, wounding at least five soldiers, according to reports.

The explosion took place at the gates of the base, which is run by Italian troops in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) with some Spanish soldiers also stationed there.

An ISAF media official at the force''''s headquarters in Kabul said, "We did have casualties - just wounded."
