NATO parliamentary assembly calls for new strategy in Afghanistan

NATO Valencia, Spain - Jose Lello, president of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) parliamentary assembly, on Friday urged the West to adopt a new strategy in Afghanistan.

Lello met the press at the start of the 54th annual meeting of the assembly, which was bringing together more than 300 delegates from 50 countries in Valencia, eastern Spain.

Barack Obama's election as US president was likely to lead to an increase of troops in Afghanistan, Lello said.

Four al-Qaeda-linked militants, 12 Afghan Taliban killed

Al Qaeda LogoKabul - Four suspected al-Qaeda-associated militants and 12 Taliban insurgents were killed while 20 others were wounded in two separate operations in Afghanistan while three Afghan police injured in a suicide attack in Khost province, officials said on Friday.

Arsala Jamal, Khost province governor, said that at least three Afghan police were injured in a suicide attack in Bak district of south-eastern Khost province.

A suicide attacker detonated an explosives-filled car near a police vehicle just outside of Khost city, injuring three police official, the governor said.

Pak Senate rejects US’ offer for NATO briefing on Afghan situation

Afghanistan, NATO Islamabad, Nov 14 : The Pakistan Senate has reportedly rejected the US embassy''s invitation for the Senate Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee to attend a key NATO briefing on the current situation in Afghanistan. The briefing is to be given by General David McKiernan, the commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

The House said that the invitation was “not in keeping with the best traditions” of diplomatic engagement and political dialogue.

Britain could send further 2,000 men to Afghanistan

Britain could send further 2,000 men to AfghanistanLondon  - Britain could send a further 2,000 troops to Afghanistan next year in response to an expected request by the US under its next president, Barack Obama, the BBC said Friday.

The broadcaster said ministers were considering sending reinforcements to Afghanistan, following requests from Afghan leaders.

The British government insisted after talks in London Thursday between Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Afghan President Hamid Karzai that troop levels had not been discussed.

Four al-Qaeda-linked militants killed in AfghanistanKabul  - The US-led coalition in Afghanistan on Friday said its troops killed four suspected al-Qaeda-associated militants during an operation in the eastern province of Paktia.

A military statement released by the US forces said that the foreign fighters were killed in Paktia province on Thursday.

The operation was carried out in Zurmat district of south-eastern Paktia province.
