Recent attack on Indian student condemned
The recent attack on an Indian student in Melbourne, OZ, on Saturday night has been condemned highly. S. M. Krishna, Indian Foreign Minister, urging the Australian authorities to nab the culprits said India would not tolerate any such attacks now.
Nitin Garg, 21, was stabbed to death while he was going to a fast food restaurant. He belonged to Punjab, a northern state in India.
While Australian police shifted the blame on opportunistic criminals, some Indian students said they were racist attacks.
Australian PM Kevin Rudd has reassured the Indian government that Australia is not in the grip of racism. Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has also condemned the attack.
"This is a nation that welcomes international students," Gillard said while condemning the attacks.
The incident has aroused extreme fear and anger among Indian students in OZ, said Gupta, president of a group of Indian students in Australia.
Following the attacks that have been taking place in OZ Amitabh Bachchan, had turned down an honorary degree from Queensland University of Technology.
Australia has also suffered losses due to these attacks as nearly 100,000 Indian students study in Australia, contributing around $2 billion to the country's economy.
