Qantas Airways to offer charter flights to the Pilbara

Qantas Airways to offer charter flights to the PilbaraAustralia's Qantas Airways Limited has entered into an agreement, under which it will offer charter flights to the Roy Hill Pilbara iron ore project beginning form August this year.

The three year agreement shows that the Gina Rinehart's Roy Hill project is on the path of revival.

Qantas will provide fly-in, fly-out services to the project three times a week and the frequency will be increased when the project has its forecast peak of about 3,600 workers. The agreement was signed by Qantas Airways Ltd's division Network Aviation for maintaining easy connectivity to the project from major Australian cities.

Mrs Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting has a 70 per cent stake in the project while Japan's Marubeni recently increased its stake to 15 per cent and it is believed that the project might be approved by December. Roy Hill says it is "cautiously optimistic" on the project and is confident of securing a debt deal this year. Data from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission showed that $1.67 billion has been invested in the 55 million-tonne-a-year port rail and mine project in the region.

Roy Hill is also investing in Pilbara accommodation villages, a new corporate headquarters and a remote operations centre at the Perth Airport business precinct.
