Pro-Palestinian protesters throw shoes at Israeli army spokesman

Amsterdam  - Dutch police on Monday confirmed they had detained two men and a woman suspected of having thrown shoes at Israeli army spokesman Ron Edelheit.

Edelheit was hit on his legs by the shoes at a lecture in Amsterdam late Sunday evening entitled "After the Gaza war, what next?" which was picketed by pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

It was unclear if Edelheit had pressed charges after the incident or not.

Amsterdam police spokesman Charmene van Damme on Monday confirmed the Dutch police had detained two man and a woman, all three in their early twenties.

"They were taken to the police station and interrogated but sent home afterwards," she said.

Van Damme said no complaint had yet been filed with the Amsterdam police. Edelheit, who is still in The Hague, could not be reached for comment.

However, Ronny Naftaniel, director of the Centre for Information and Documentation about Israel (CIDI) in The Hague and a co-organizers of the event, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that Edelheit had filed a complaint with the police in The Hague.

A spokesman of the police in The Hague said it could not confirm this information for privacy reasons.

Edelheit's lecture took place in the Amsterdam Apollo Hotel on Sunday. Outside, around 50 supporters of the Dutch Palestine Committee assembled in a rally against the Israeli army spokesman's visit.

Co-organizer CIDI said it had been forced to change the lecture's location just hours before it was due to start.

The hotel where the lecture would be held cancelled after receiving threats and hate mail. CIDI also said it had received numerous threats and hate mail.

The Dutch Palestine Committee spokesman said it had protested against Edelheit's visit but said it knew nothing about the threats. dpa
