Warsaw - A Polish clerk will take the stand this week for causing the State Treasury a loss of 5 groszy (1.5 US pennies) after she failed to ring up a sale at a kiosk, local media reported Tuesday.

Ewa Stokowska was employed at a kiosk when a customer asked her to photocopy a document for 30 groszy, including a 5 groszy tax.

Stokowska said she didn't put the coins into the register because her boss told her not to bother.

But the customer, who had asked for a copy of his student id card, turned out to be an inspector from the local tax office.

A lower court fined Stokowska 500 zloty after she declined to pay a 120 zloty mandate. Stokowska appealed the decision and will go before a higher court in Lodz on Friday, reported broadcaster TVN 24.

A tax official said the amount was small, but failure to ring up sales was an offence. (dpa)
