Police working to confirm Great White Shark Sighting in Maine

Efforts are being made by Wells police to confirm a possible great white shark sighting 1.2 miles off Moody Beach in Maine. The shark was seen around 1:30 pm on Saturday and a boat was later deployed into the area by Wells harbormaster to confirm the sighting. However, no confirmation has so far come for the sighting.

According to Jaron Thibault, who was on the charter boat with his family, they got close to the shark three times.

Scott Lever said that he was on a separate boat 25 miles off of Portland, Maine, and saw as shape after leaning over the 22-foot center console fishing boat.

The US Coast Guard and neighboring beaches were contacted by the Wells police to inform them about the sighting. Police said that is unusual to come across a sighting at this time of the year because of the proximity to the beach.

The Wells Police Department said that it does not feel any need for a beach closure at this time. Efforts will continue to confirm the sighting. An avid diver with experience diving around sharks also reported seeing a shark.

Wells Harbormaster Chris Mayo said, "In my time as harbormaster, this is the most credible report of a large predator".

The movie 'Jaws' was released on June 20, 1975, and the shark sightings have coincided with the release date of the movie, in which a great white shark attacks people on a fictional New England town.
