Chidambaram to propose tax exemption for Oscar-winning Rahman

P. ChidambaramKhatkar Kalan (Punjab)/ New Delhi, Feb 23 : Congratulating the team of ''Slumdog Millionaire'' for its resounding success at the Oscars, Home Minister P. Chidambaram today said he would ask the Finance Ministry to exempt from taxation all cash prizes won by A R Rahman at the Oscars.

"If the Oscars carry any cash award, I would recommend to the Finance Minister that it should be exempt from taxation," Chidambaram said while addressing a public function at Khatkar Kalan in Punjab today.

Mumbai terror attack charge-sheet to be filed soon: Chidambaram

P. ChidambaramNew Delhi, Feb 17 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday said that Maharashtra Police has completed its investigations into the Mumbai terror attacks and a charge-sheet will be filed soon.

"The police investigation has been completed and the charge-sheets will be filed soon," Chidambaram said while replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha.

The Minister rejected suggestions to refer the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Delhi police to be among India''s elite forces: Chidambaram

P. ChidambaramNew Delhi, Feb 17 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram today said that all efforts would be taken to make Delhi Police force among the best forces in the country.

Chidambaram, who was the chief guest at the 62nd Raising Day Parade of the Delhi Police, said that various aspects of policing in Delhi are being taken into consideration to make it one of the best forces in the country.

"We will do everything in our power and capacity to keep Delhi Police among the best police forces in the country," he added.

Chidambaram hails Interim BudgetNew Delhi, Feb 17 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has hailed the interim budget for 2009-10, presented in Parliament today.

Complimenting acting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for his budget speech and the Interim Budget for 2009-10, Chidambaram said: "He had before him an unenviable task - having to present an Interim Budget at the end of a difficult year caused by a global financial crisis. It is, however, a matter of satisfaction that the Indian economy has weathered the global crisis reasonably well and is expected to post a growth rate of 7.1 per cent in 2008-09."

"Since Pakistan and Modi are saying the same thing on Mumbai attacks, someone please ask Modi if he and Pakistan are in contact with each other," Chidambaram said.

Inaugurating the first coastal police station in Kollam district here, Chidambaram said, "The Central Government has ambitious plans to strengthen the national security measures along its coastal lines."
