Mumbai attacks: Mullen says Pak-based terror groups pose greater threat than before

Kolkata, Dec. 11 : The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, has warned that in the wake of last month's terror strikes in Mumbai, Pakistan-based terrorists pose a greater global threat than was previously estimated.

Stating that the November 26-29 attacks showed that Pakistan-based groups were able to operate at a "much higher level" than previously estimated, Admiral Mullen said now more than ever, there was an urgent need for raising the quality of counter-terrorism efforts.

The Telegraph quotes the Washington-based SITE Intelligence Group as saying that the US, UK and Israel is being lumped with India as enemies that should be made to suffer.

According to a U. S. Embassy press release, the agenda included meetings with National Security Advisor M. K. Narayanan, Defence Minister A. K. Antony and Chief of Naval Staff/Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman Admiral Sureesh Mehta.

Admiral Mullen demands action against Pak-based extremists

Islamabad, Dec. 4 : The Chairman of the U. S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, has called on the Pakistan Government to crackdown on all extremist elements residing within its territory.

Admiral Mullen’s missive came after his meetings with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zadari, National Security Adviser Mahmud Durrani, the Chairman of the Pakistan Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Tariq Majid, the army chief, General Asfaq Parvez Kayani and the ISI chief, Lt. General Shuja Pasha to discuss the Mumbai terror attacks.

According to the Daily Times and The News, Admiral Mullen urged Pakistan to investigate all possible links between the Mumbai attacks and Pakistani groups and to broaden its campaign against militants.

Top US military officer travels to India, Pakistan

Washington, Dec. 3 : U. S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen is traveling with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to India and Pakistan as part of an American diplomatic effort to ease tensions in the Indian subcontinent in the wake of last week''s Mumbai attacks.

"Admiral Mullen is in the area, as is Secretary Rice," Defense Secretary Gates told reporters at a news conference.

The News quoted a senior military official as saying separately that Admiral Mullen would visit both Pakistan and India.

No further details about Admiral Mullen''s trip were provided, given the sensitivity of the situation.
