Ruesselsheim, Germany - Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday that her government would grant credit guarantees to Opel to help the struggling German carmaker in its battle for survival.

Germany was looking for an investor that it could support with the goal of finding a long-term solution to secure the company's future, she told workers at an Opel plant in Ruesselsheim.

Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel repeated Saturday her call for improved regulation of the financial markets, just days ahead of the Group of 20 (G20) summit of leading economies in London.

Speaking at a political gathering of Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) the chancellor blamed "market excesses" for the current crisis.

"The world is standing at a crossroad," Merkel said, adding, "we can't afford such crises every ten years."

Berlin  - US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have moved to lay aside differences ahead of next week's summit of the world's big economies by agreeing that market reform will be the key issue on the meeting's agenda, a spokesman in Berlin said Friday.

The buildup to the Group of 20 summit of the world's most advanced powers and leading emerging economies in London has been accompanied by tensions between Washington and Europe over the need to help spur global economic growth with more government spending.

Berlin - Germany wants to develop relations with Mongolia, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday after talks with Mongolian Prime Minister Sanj Bayar in Berlin.

She told a news conference there was scope for expanding economic ties with the resource-rich Central Asian nation.

Bayar, who earlier met Economics Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, said his visit to Germany also included talks with German business leaders in the steel, banking and rail sectors.

Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday the development of a new strategic concept for NATO would top the agenda at next week's summit of 26 NATO member states, co-hosted by France and Germany.

"NATO needs an adaptation of its strategy to new challenges," Merkel told the German parliament, adding that the transatlantic alliance needed to incorporate the "basic principle of networked security" to address current and future threats.
