Wagah Border (Punjab)/ Sonauli,Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 7 : Pakistanis arriving on the Indo-Pak peace bus in Amritsar have given a mixed reaction to President General Musharraf's decision to impose a state of emergency across their country.

Some of the passengers on board the bus backed Musharraf's decision.

"The government was helpless. There were many things to be considered, many lives were at stake. Democratic process in the country was moving at a great speed," said Aliya Imam, a professor from Pakistan.

Others, however, termed Musharraf's decision as wrong.

"This is all wrong. Such things should not take place in a democratic country. One should give them (the media) a chance and hold discussions on the table and solve it. You cannot bring democracy through violence or by imposing emergency," said Mohammad Naseem, Executive Editor of a newspaper in
Pakistan.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened along the 1,747 kilometer-long porous Indo-Nepal border.

Security officials said they were working in tandem with the State Government, in keeping an eye on the main transit points along the border.

"Due to the emergency being imposed in Pakistan, we have received order from our higher headquarters to be more alert since the Indo-Nepal border is porous and easier for anyone to cross over. We have alerted the border areas and have also informed the Intelligence Agency," said S. Bandhopathya, Director Inspector General, Seema Suraksha Bal, Gorakhpur division.

President General Pervez Musharraf imposed a state of emergency in a bid to end an eight-month crisis over his rule stoked by challenges from a hostile judiciary, militants and political rivals.

The United States called the measure "very disappointing". (ANI)
