Pakistan Supreme Court orders suspension of Islamabad DIG and Dy Commissioner

Islamabad, Oct 1 : Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry today ordered the suspension and arrest of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Marwat Shah and Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad Aamer Ahmad Ali during a suo moto hearing of Saturday’s violence that injured over 50 lawyers and journalists.

Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah told the apex court that a high-powered committee was constituted to look into the incident, but the court asked for immediate action against those responsible for the incident, The News reported.

On Saturday, police used force on lawyers, journalists and other civil society representatives who were participating in a “Black Day” demonstration to protest the Supreme Court verdict permitting President General Pervez Musharraf to contest the October 6 Presidential elections in uniform.

According to reports, at least 53 people, including lawyers and journalists, were injured when police fired tear gas, baton charged and threw stones at protesting lawyers and human rights activists on September 29. (With inputs from ANI)
