Pak rejects charge of Karzai murder plan being developed in its tribal areas

Afghanistan President Hamid KarzaiKabul, May 1: Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas has rejected charges that the plot to kill Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai last week was hatched in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

“The allegation appears baseless. Anybody can say that militants in the Tribal Areas have done this or that but how can one validate such claims?” Abbas asked reporters.

The rebuttal came after Afghanistan Intelligence Chief Amrullah Saleh said that militants involved in the weekend plot were in phone contact with people in Pakistan’s Bajaur and north Waziristan tribal agencies and Peshawar.

“There is very, very strong evidence suggesting that Pakistan’s soil once again has been used to inflict pain on our nation. The Afghan Security Forces raided a Taliban hideout in Kabul, sparking a battle that left seven people dead, including two militants involved in the attack,” the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.
