Washington, Mar. 20 : The political crisis in Pakistan may have died down for the time being with President Asif Ali Zardari reinstating the deposed judiciary and Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry as the Chief Justice, but the political brick batting between leaders in the country would hardly see any change in the near future, says the Washington Post.

According to the newspaper, the Pakistani leadership is more concerned about pulling each other’s leg rather than fighting insurgency in the country.

“As they showed during the past week, Pakistan''s civilian and secular political leaders are more concerned with destroying each other than with fighting extremists who are rapidly gaining strength in the country,” the article said.

It charged both President Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif of using ‘undemocratic tactics’ to influence people’s opinion regarding the leadership of the country.

“Sharif chose to fight the government mostly in the streets rather than in Parliament, while Zardari tried to block last weekend''s protests with mass arrests and media censorship,” the article added.

The newspaper said that the past political bedlam in Pakistan had subsequently resulted in military coups which was tolerated by the United States, but in the current scenario where the Taliban and Al-Qaeda is expanding its reach, the pattern must be broken.

According to the article, the Obama administration should cultivate a stable government in Pakistan on the principles which were applied in Afghanistan. (ANI)
