There were more than 1,000 spectators present at Brevard County South Beaches as the annual Tour de Turtles started. People were present to support Myrtle and Desh, two loggerhead sea turtles racing towards the ocean.

They are not alone, as 11 other turtles from different parts including Costa Rica, Panama, Vero Beach, Marathon Key, Anna Maria Island, Nevis and the Bahamas will be competing in the race. Those 11 turtles have already been released. Turtles have always remained a favorite topic of research among scientists.

But unfortunately they have not been able to know much about them. The race proves to be a great opportunity for the researchers to have in-depth knowledge about the migration pattern of the turtles. The Sea Turtle Conservancy Organization and researchers from the University of Central will be handling the data and track the migration pattern as well.

In order to track them, authorities concerned have fitted every shell of the turtles will satellite transmitter. For the next three months, experts using instruments attached to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Organization weather satellites will monitor the turtles' travel.

It has to be seen which turtle travels the farthest. As per experts, the transmitters may continue to send data for many years afterwards, which may help them, know important information about loggerhead migratory patterns.

David Godfrey of the Sea Turtle Conservancy said, "They go to all different kinds of forging grounds in other countries".
