Optus will warn customers about huge international roaming charges Australian telecom carrier, Optus is planning start warning its customers through an SMS message when their bills due to international data uses rise substantially.

The carrier will send an SMS to customers subscribed to monthly billing plans when they download data on an overseas network, warning them of high charges of data usage. The message will urge customers to disable data roaming or avoid using while on international networks to avoid additional charges.

If the customer continues to sue data services, the carrier will send a message each time after usage informing them of how much worth of data they have used. Optus is believed to the most expensive carrier for international data using charges at $20 per megabyte.

Optus Marketing Director Gavin Williams says, "We believe it will lead to fewer customers coming home to unexpectedly high mobile bills or at least make customers more aware of how much it will cost them if they do choose to use data roaming."

He said that the carrier will look into reducing its charges some time in future.
