Only 50 Subscribers Under Single Unit Of Bandwidth, Says TRAITo provide better quality of services (QoS) standards in India, telecom regulator TRAI has asked for measures to make sure that there is a limit put to set total number of subscribers under a single bandwidth unit.

In a declaration, the regulator said, “There have been complaints from the subscribers regarding inadequate broadband speed being provided by the Internet Service Providers. Most of the complaints allege that the available broadband speed is lower than the subscribed speed.”

It also said that only 50 subscribers would come under a single unit of bandwidth as indicated by international standards.

But TRAI has clarified that it doesn’t expects to guarantee such practices through use of rules on the service suppliers.

It said that any regulatory trouble in the current economic situation of Internet sector may boost the service provisioning cost and will have adverse impact on broadband growth in the country.

It asked operators to release quarterly reports of the contention ration on their individual websites.

Previously in reaction to a consultation paper floated by TRAI on the subject, the telecom operators indicated that setting contention ratio and binding to it will be tricky in the current situation.

Moreover, TRAI asked internet service providers (ISPs) and telecom operators to ensure availability of the minimum required bandwidth in their networks.

“Operators must ensure availability of the minimum required bandwidth in their network as per the maximum contention ratio suggested by the regulator for different services based on the number of customers,” it said.
