‘One Day Without Shoes’ spreads awareness about mossy foot disease
Toms Shoes has launched the 'One Day Without Shoes' Campaign. It will carry out the program from May 5 to May 21. With this program, everyone can contribute in the effort by Toms. The campaign is asking people to Instagram the tagged photos of their bare feet.
According to a Los Angeles Times article, Toms Shoes will be donating a new pair of shoes to a child in need.
Toms will donate 1 million shoes under 'One Day Without Shoes' Campaign. The campaign aims at raising awareness of podoconiosis, or mossy foot disease. According to the Mossy Foot Project, podoconiosis infects about 5% of the population living in the highland tropical areas of Africa. According to World Health Organization report, mossy foot disease can attack individuals, particularly in Ethiopia.
According to the report, "Population-based surveys suggest a prevalence of 5-10% in barefoot populations living on irritant soil. In Ethiopia, 1 million people are estimated to be affected, while in Cameroon, a further 500 000 people are estimated to be affected".
It added that the economic results are severe i. e. productivity losses per patient add up to 45% of working days per year and as a result of this, economic losses to a country like Ethiopia goes beyond US$ 200 million per year. It also said that stigmatization of people with podoconiosis is prominent; many patients are expelled from local meetings, school, churches and mosques, and are also barred from marriage with unaffected individuals.
This disease could be prevented if a person is having a pair of shoes to wear, when working in fields, so the campaign is an effort to spread awareness regarding the disease and make people think of contributing to deal with the disease to a certain extent.
