OLPC Will Release & Open Source Hardware Design, Says Negroponte
Due to many reasons, the XO laptop computers from One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) non-profit organization failed to turn really popular on the market.
However, the OLPC organization aspires to alter that by letting other contract manufacturers to build and ship XO machines.
Mr. Nicholas Negroponte, the chief of OLPC, who predicts that within 3 years there will be 5 to 6 million machines a month, built by companies around the world, stated, “We had to build the first laptop because no one else would do it. But now, OLPC will release and open source hardware design and invite others to copy it.”
Presently, the contract makers of electronics manufacture ‘OLPC XO’ machines after receiving an order from the organization, who in turn sells its low-priced laptop computers to clients throughout the world.
Mr. Negroponte desires actual hardware manufacturers to make the laptops that reduce costs as well as quickens time-to-market of the XOs.
But when it comes to cost of OLPC XO, which is very low, for hardware makers it may not be an appealing product to market.
Mr. Negroponte also said that approximately 500 thousand children around the world already have OLPC XO-1 laptop computers.
Negroponte expects worldwide companies to produce around 5-6 million such machines on a monthly basis by the next 3-years.
Current OLPC XO laptop comes with exciting features that include AMD Geode LX-700 processor with 433MHz clock-speed and integrated graphics controller, 256MB of PC-2700 (DDR 333MHz) memory, 1GB NAND flash that substitutes hard disk drive, 7.5” screen with 1200x900 resolution, wireless and wired network adapters in addition to a built-in webcam, microphone, speakers and many more.
Last May, as the OLPC sought broader acceptance--and five months after Bill Gates told that the “OLPC hasn't done that well”--the group said that it would be working with Microsoft to make a Windows variety of its XO laptop, in addition to the original Linux model.
