Oliver Sacks, author of "Awakenings", dies at 84
According to reports, Oliver Sacks, author of "Awakenings" and a well-known neurologist, has passed away at the age of 82. According to his assistant, Kate Edgar, Sacks died as a result of cancer. His death has been confirmed in a statement on Sacks' website.
Sacks, professor of neurology at New York University School of Medicine, made an announcement regarding a rare eye tumor in February. He told at that time that he was in the stages of terminal cancer.
He is famous for his writing on neurological case histories together with "An Anthropologist on Mars" and “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat". His book "Awakenings," was written by him on the basis of his work with some patients in the 1960s. An Oscar-nominated movie with the same name was made on the basis of the book. The movie starred Robin Williams and Robert De Niro.
According to a statement on Sacks' website, he did his favorite activities in his final days; he played the piano, wrote to his friends, enjoyed smoked salmon and swimming and also completed a number of articles. As per the statement, "His final thoughts were of gratitude for a life well lived and the privilege of working with his patients at various hospitals and residences including the Little Sisters of the Poor in the Bronx and in Queens, New York".
According to the statement, he had been “writing to the last”. A few weeks ago, he published an essay and two more articles written by him will be published soon.
