Novel Mustard Hybrid Gives More Yield During Trials

A revolutionary new and a hybrid variety of mustard seed has been developed by Novel Mustard Hybrid Gives More Yield During Trials the scientists of the National Research Centre on Rapeseed-Mustard in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, under the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR). This new seed which is supposed to be released in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh is named the NRC Sankar Sarson (NR CHB 506). The brassica research program being carried out in the country will immensely be benefited from this new hybrid seed.

In 11 trials conducted across five States, the hybrid yield was 26% higher than traditional variety, according to K.H. Singh, senior scientist and the breeder of this seed. The ICAR further reported that in some of the locations, yield was up to 32 quintals per hectare.

This new hybrid seed will have medium maturity duration of 133 days, would be medium tall approximately up to 190 cm, and will have the oil content of 40.6%.

“The development of mustard hybrid would help enhance productivity of this second most important oilseed crop in the country. According to him, the new variety would contribute to bringing about self-sufficiency in the edible oils sector,” informed NRC Director Arvind Kumar.

The Varietal Identification Committee chaired by Dy. Director-General (Crop Sciences) P.L. Gautam during a meeting of the All-India Coordinated Research Project on Rapeseed-Mustard in Bhubaneswar, was honored to release the hybrid.
