Scientists have now made a key discovery in understanding how a subset of bacterial cells escape being killed by many antibiotics.

Cells become 'persisters' by entering a state in which they stop replicating and are able to tolerate antibiotics.

Anne Hathaway injures foot on holiday

The 31-year-old, who has been holidaying on the island of Oahu with her husband Adam Shulman for several days, hurt herself after she got into difficulty in a strong rip current close to the beach.

Hathaway started screaming for help and a nearby surfer rushed to assist her back to safety, reports radaronline. com.

"I have been preparing actually since 2013.  I know everytime an actor loses weight or starts looking fitter or thinner, it is always for a reason.  But this is me getting ready for the most fantastic time of my life in all aspects. Professionally and personally 2014 is going to be my year," the 38-year-old said here Thursday at Rouble Nagi's art exhibition.

Being physically fit in your teenage years reduces the risk of a heart attack later in life, says a new study.

"Men who are fit and obese in their teens run a higher risk of having a heart attack than unfit, lean men," said a study published in the European Heart Journal.

Researchers from Sweden-based Umeå University analysed data from 743,498 Swedish men who received a medical examination at the age of 18.

MFS Investments launches 3 actively managed large-cap ETFs

MFSMFS Investments on Thursday announced the launch of three actively managed large-cap exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in partnership with State Street Global Advisors.

Under the terms of the partnership, MFS will be responsible for handling the investment process of the funds while the responsibility of marketing and distribution will be on State Street Global Advisors.

MFS is not the first mutual fund (MF) firm that has teamed up with an existing ETF firm to enter the ETF field. In October last year, Fidelity Investments launched its first ETF in partnership with BlackRock Inc's iShares.

Govt. to refund Rs 112.6bn to BSNL & MTNL

MTNL BSNLThe government on Thursday allowed state-run telecom firms Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) to get refunds of a total Rs 112.6 billion by returning their 4G radio spectrum.

By returning their 4G radio spectrum to the government, BSNL will receive Rs 67.24 billion, while MTNL will get Rs 45.34 billion, Information & Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari told reporters.

Mr. Tewari added that the payment of the money would be staggered and done over a period of time.
