Scientists reveal how adhesive protein causes malaria

Washington, Sept 26 : Researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet (KI) and the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI) say that they have identified specific parts of the adhesive protein produced by the malaria parasite, which can lead to the development of a vaccine for the disease in future.

Led by Professor Mats Wahlgren at the Department of Microbiology, Tumour and Cell Biology at KI, a team of researchers studied the adhesive protein PfEMP1 in children with severe malaria.

Greenland snow melting hit record high in high places, says NASA study

Washington, Sept 26 : A new NASA-supported study has reported that 2007 marked an overall rise in the melting trend over the entire Greenland ice sheet.

More surprising, researchers said, was the fact that melting in high-altitude areas was 150 percent more than average, adding that the amount of snow that had melted this year over Greenland could cover the surface size of the US more than twice.

South African cricket team arrives in Karachi

Karachi, Sept.26 : The South African cricket team arrived in Karachi on Wednesday to play two Test matches and five One-day Internationals against Pakistan.

Tight security measures were taken at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on the arrival of the visiting team. Dozens of police officers including elite commandos were deployed at the airport. They surrounded the team as they left the Jinnah terminal building.

Dawood's brother surrenders, seeks bail from Mumbai court

Mumbai, Sept.26 : Fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim's brother, Iqbal Kaskar, has surrendered before a special court in Mumbai in connection with a case relating to the illegal construction of Sara-Sahara shopping malls.

Kaskar, who was acquitted in the case where he is alleged to have aided Dawood in constructing the structures, had to surrender after the Bombay High Court last week admitted an appeal against his acquittal.

Following the surrender, Kaskar sought bail and the court is to hear the arguments in the matter.
