Herbal Supplements Regulated Differently than Drugs, says Dr. Rick Kingston

On Tuesday, professional basketball player Lamar Odom was found unconscious at a Nevada’s brothel. After investigation, it was found that the 35-year-old former Los Angeles Laker had taken about 10 pills of ‘herbal Viagra’ and abused cocaine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had asked public not to use the tablets. But the government does not regulate drugs and herbal supplements in the same way.

When Dr. Rick Kingston, President of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs for SafetyCall, was asked why federal government do that, Kingston said people should understand one thing very clearly that herbal Viagra are regulated by the government, but differently than drugs.

Theranos using its proprietary technology on single test

During an interview, Chief Executive Officer of Theranos Inc., Elizabeth Holmes, said the company is using its proprietary technology on just one test out of over 200 it offers. Holmes said they will expand the technology’s use after they get permission from the FDA for more uses.

The company’s technology can perform accurate test and that too by using a few drops of blood. The company itself has limited its technology to just a single test. Questions were raised with regard to the accuracy of its technology in an article published in the Wall Street Journal. But the CEO has said that their services are accurate and reliable.

Children born to women who faced stress during pregnancy may have coordination problem in body movements in teenage

Stress can happen due to a number of reasons during pregnancy. Women who have faced stressful events during pregnancy may have children who can face coordination problem in their body movements as teenagers.

In the study, the researchers asked 2,900 women in Australia twice during their pregnancy, at 18 weeks and 34 weeks, whether they have faced any stressful even when they expecting baby. Stress events included financial problems, death of family member or friend, separation or divorce.

In the next phase, the researchers have assessed these women’s children. Main aim of the researchers was to assess the overall coordination and ability to control body movements. It was checked at three time points, when they were 10, 14 and 17 years old.

Dietary supplements lead to 23,000 emergency room visits every year

A decade-long research has found that over-the-counter supplements have been responsible for sending people to emergency rooms. As per the study, 23,000 visits to emergency rooms have been recorded owing to the supplements.

The supplements include vitamins, sexual enhancements and weight loss aids. The research findings are based on the sample of 63 emergency departments from 2004 to 2013. Through the study, the researchers have raised concerns over the safety of the industry, which is highly unregulated.

But it cannot be ignored that the industry is quite popular. It brought in $14.8 billion in 2007. Inclination of patients was more towards the ones aged between 20 and 34, more than a quarter belonged to this age group.

Novel Test can identify patients facing high risk of testicular cancer relapse

As per an analysis published in the Clinical Cancer Research Journal, a test has been developed that can identify patients who are at an increased risk of facing a relapse from testicular cancer. The test developed by researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research is able to detect the risk even if there is evidence of tumor spread.

Using three characteristics of testicular cancer, the new test identifies who is at increased risk of facing testicular cancer relapse. In the making of the test, the researchers gathered data from the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit and studied 177 tumors specimens from patients living with stage 1 nonseminomatous tumors.

Research finds links between epigenetic regulation and ASD in human patients

Science Daily has reported that regulation of a family of brain proteins called bromodomain and extra-terminal domain that contains transcription regulators (BETs) plays the main role in normal cognition and behavior.

The research was conducted at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Generally, scientists pay attention to finding individual genes that lead to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), but latest study has discovered relation between epigenetic regulation and ASD in human patients.

The study was published on September 21 and in The Journal of Experimental Medicine on October 19.
