British Astronaut Tim Peake to take London Marathon ‘out of the Earth’

If you think running marathon is hard, how about running one in space? It is strange and complicated, but European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Tim Peake is going to participate in the London Marathon while being in orbit.

British astronaut Peake will soon visit the International Space Station (ISS). The astronaut announced on Friday that he has planned not to miss the London Marathon and become a remote participant.

The 43-year-old astronaut will head to the space station in low earth orbit on December 15. He will be launched for a six-month mission on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The launch has been scheduled to take place from Kazakhstan.

World’s Migratory Birds are at Risk, Need Immediate Protection

A new study showed that migration isn’t easy for most of the birds. More than 90% migratory bird species face troubles when they are on their way of migration, according to the study published in the journal Science.

Loss of habitat and hunting are some of the common problems that most migratory birds face on their journeys. Study researchers are calling for international efforts to prevent extinction risks that these birds face.

In last three decades, more than 50% migratory birds travelling the world's main flyways have experienced decline in their populations, says Claire Runge, a researcher from the University of Queensland and lead author of the study that compared the migration paths of over 1,400 migratory birds with the protections given to them in different nations.

Study: Chronic exposure to pesticides can damage children's lung function by about as much as secondhand cigarette smoke does

A study of farm worker children in the Salinas Valley has suggested that chronic exposure to pesticides can harm the lung function of children by nearly as much as secondhand cigarette smoke does.

The long-term study was conducted on 279 children from farm worker families, and it is the first one to say that even being one step removed from pesticides can damage the lungs of children. Earlier studies have inspected effects on grownups, who spray the chemicals or work in fields where in the pesticides are applied.

The co-author of the study, Brenda Eskenazi, an epidemiologist at UC Berkeley, said this was the first time ever that a residential population was examined, and that too, a residential population of children.

New York City’s new warning label for salt-laden chain restaurant food heads for a court fight

New York City’s latest warning label for salt-laden chain restaurant food has faced a court battle as restaurateurs sued on Thursday, arguing that health regulators overstepped legal limits to act out the first-of-its-kind condition.

The suit by National Restaurant Association has come only two days after the rule became effective, that compelled chain eateries to place a salt-shaker icon on menu items that cross the standard daily limit of 2,300 milligrams of sodium. The group had promised to challenge the rule approved by the city Board of Health, sprinkling salt warnings on a number of dishes ranging from pizzas to burgers to salads.
