Some important factors to consider before signing up for Mars mission

Only some days are left to apply to NASA's astronaut program, which may ultimately result into a trip to the Red Planet in the 2030s. Mars One and SpaceX are even hopeful of sending civilians much sooner to the red planet. However, prior to signing up, it is fair to ensure that all aspiring interplanetary explorers are aware of the involved risks.

Thus, take it as a bit of Mars reality check, courtesy of Pascal Lee, a planetary scientist at the SETI Institute. At the New Worlds conference 2015 in Austin, Texas, Lee talked about the topic of settling Mars.

First of all, forget about the space travel challenges involved in going from our planet to Earth, at least for now.

New digital map offers impressive rendering of Mars landscape

An elaborate digital map is offering an extraordinary rendering of the Mars landscape. With the help of NASA open data, Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency of the UK, has surveyed a portion of the Red Planet’s surface for the creation of a one-off paper and digital map.

Produced at a scale of 1 to 4 million, the 2,282-by-1,691-mile Mars map is part of an OS initiative to assess potential use of its mapping expertise for the Red Planet missions in future.

In a press release, OS Director of Products David Henderson described that becoming more accustomed to space is something that is quite interesting for all and that chance of applying their innovative cartography and mapping tradecraft to another planet was something they couldn’t resist.

Antarctic study: Iceberg has killed about 150,000 Adelie penguins in 5 years

According to scientists, an estimated 150,000 Adelie penguins have been reported dead on Antarctica's Cape Denison during the last five years since a huge giant iceberg has hindered their main access to food.

Recently published in the journal Antarctic Science, a study said that the B09B iceberg hit the Mertz Glacier Tongue and got stuck in Commonwealth Bay, a region that was hardly ever covered by sea-ice, making it apt for Adelie penguin colonies.

The B09B include an area of nearly 1,120 square miles. It obstructed the penguins' natural feeding areas starting in December 2010. The large part of ice enforced the birds to walk over 37 miles, looking for food, and gradually decreased the population to only a few thousand.

Report: World’s water scarcity problem is even worse than previously realized

The animal agriculture industry is well known for being among the most resource-intensive industries on the Earth.

Occupying nearly 45% of the Earth’s total land area, it has estimated how heavily it is contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions problem in the world range from at least 14% to a maximum of 51%.

Previously this month it came to news that a meat company called Tyson Foods, Inc. was a heavier polluter of the US waterways as compared to oil and gas giant ExxonMobil.

The intensive use of freshwater resources by meat and dairy industries has also been associated with prolonged drought in California State.

Six-foot-tall flightless bird once walked in the Arctic region

Nearly 53 million years back during the Eocene Epoch, Ellesmere Island in the high Arctic looked like cyprus swamplands. According to fossil evidence it was home to prehistoric turtles, alligators and other animals.

Now, a latest study has confirmed that a 6-foot tall flightless bird with head of the size of a horse head and weighing several hundred pounds also used to stay there in winters.

In a study appeared in Scientific Reports, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and the University of Colorado-Boulder have studied and explained the first and only fossil proof from the Arctic of a huge bird called Gastornis.
