Sensex closes 173 points lower Mumbai, May 25 : A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Wednesday closed 173 points lower and again below the 18,000-mark.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) which opened at 17,976.36 points, closed at 17,838.55 points (provisional), down 173.42 points or 0.96 percent from its previous close at 18,011.97 points.

The Sensex had slipped below the 18,000-level on Monday for the first time in about two months.

Ashok Leyland bags $23.3 million-worth Bangladesh order

Ashok LeylandMumbai, May 25 : Hinduja Group's automobile manufacturing arm Ashok Leyland Wednesday said it had bagged an order worth $23.3 million (Rs. 105 crore) from state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) for 290 double-decker buses.

"This represents the company's largest single order for double-decker buses from that country (Bangladesh)," Ashok Leyland said in a regulatory filing.

The company added that it considered Bangladesh as one of its major export destinations.

Vijayawada police stops shooting of Varma's movie

Ram Gopal VarmaHyderabad, May 25 : Vijayawada police Wednesday cancelled the permission for the shooting of eminent filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's Telugu movie "Bezwada Rowdeelu" following an appeal by a group of lawyers from the city.

Vijayawada Police Commissioner Amit Garg issued orders to cancel the permission for filming of the controversial movie, which is said to be based on the tussle between two local politicians - Devineni Nehru and late legislator Vangaveeti Ranga.

DLF quarterly net profit slumps 19 percentMumbai, May 25 : India's real estate developer DLF Ltd has posted 19 percent decrease in its net profit at Rs. 344.54 crore for the quarter ended March 31 as against Rs. 426.38 crore during the like period of the previous fiscal owing to higher steel and cement prices.

Sales, however, rose 34.5 percent at Rs. 2,683.09 crore during the quarter under review as compared to Rs. 1,994.37 crore during the like period of the previous financial year, the company said in a regulatory filing late Tuesday evening.
