MIT’s 3-D Printer can Print 10 Materials At a time

A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has created a 'Multifab' 3-D printer with a unique ability to print 10 materials at one time. The printer is created by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL).

This incredibly new system can self-calibrate and self-correct, and also saves the user from having to do the grueling fine-tuning themselves, said its makers.

The system's feedback loop 3D-scans and detects errors, allowing it to create 'correction masks'. It also gives users the ability to embed complex components, such as circuits and sensors directly into the object that is being printed.

US Marine Biologists investigating Death of Whales off Alaska’s Shores

As per reports, marine biologists in the United States have launched an investigation to discover the cause that led to death of about 30 large whales in the western Gulf of Alaska. A federal agency declared this as an unusual mortality event.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) spokeswoman Julie Speegle said on Friday that they are not clear what has led to the mass death of the marine creatures. But she suspected that the incident could be linked to a toxic algae bloom in the Pacific Ocean, Reuters reported.

Ms. Speegle said, "Biotoxins will be one of the top priorities but not the only priority that we'll be looking at to rule in or rule out whether it's playing a role in this death investigation and these mortalities, both in Canada and the US".

ISS receives whiskey for aging study

The international space station (ISS) has received five types of distilled spirits sent by a Japanese company known for its whiskey and other alcoholic beverages. The alcoholic beverages were sent in Japan's 10,000 pound cargo shipment that arrived Monday at the ISS.

Six astronauts are not supposed to take even a sip of the alcoholic beverages sent up there, as these are parts of experiments meant to help find out pace of aging process in space.

Suntory, the Japanese spirits conglomerate that owns such familiar whiskey brands as Jim Beam and Maker's Mark, is supporting the stint.

Manhattan-sized ice chunk separates from Greenland glacier

Researchers learnt from satellite images that the world's fastest moving glacier has released a piece of ice measuring nearly 5 square miles over two days. Scientists say it's not wrong to call it the most significant calving events on record.

The European Space Agency's (ESA) Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-2A weather satellites took the radar images of the Jakobshavn glacier in Greenland between July 17 and August 19. The images clearly show that the massive glacier headed westward and later quickly retreated as a huge chunk fell off it front sometimes between August 14 and August 16.

Carbon monoxide gas fueled fire fountains on moon

A new research has suggested that carbon monoxide was responsible for eruption of volcanic fire fountains off the lunar surface. A study was conducted by scientists from Brown University and the Carnegie Institution for Science, identifying the volatile gas that drove those eruptions.

Fire fountains are often seen in Hawaii; these are a kind of eruptions that require mixing of volatiles with the erupting lava. AS the lava rise from the depths, volatile compounds begin to turn into gas.

Expansion of that gas results into the blast of lava into the air once it reaches the surface. It's very similar to taking the lid of a shaken bottle of soda.
