Black Children with Appendicitis less Likely to get Painkillers in ER

A new study has revealed that black children in the US who are being treated for acute appendicitis in emergency room are given less painkillers than that given to white children.

According to report of NBC News, researchers noticed that just about 50% children with acute appendicitis in the ER received pain meds, while there are strong recommendations that children with appendicitis in ER should be given painkillers.

Dr. Monika Goyal from the Children’s National Health System in Washington and other researchers of the study said black children with moderate pain were found less likely to be given any analgesia, while black children with severe pain were found less likely to be treated with opioids.

More Young Kids swallowing Hand Sanitizer in US

The Georgia Poison Center revealed that it has noticed a hike in children swallowing hand sanitizer in the United States. As per an earlier survey by the center, poison centers across the United States have reported an increase of about 400% in called related to children under 12 year old getting drunk to hand sanitizer. The increase has been noticed in last five years, the poison center said.

Dr. Rutherfoord Rose from the Virginia Poison Center talked on the matter and said the Virginia Poison Center’s calls are parallel to the nationwide experience for all poison centers. Most of the calls that the poison center in Virginia received since 2010 involved young children who swallowed hand sanitizer accidentally, according to Rose.

Study links Indoor Pesticides to Leukemia, Lymphoma

A new study has found that children who are uncovered to pesticides could be at risk for childhood cancers. Researchers found that children exposed to indoor pesticides are more likely to develop leukemia or lymphoma.

According to the researchers, they have reviewed more than a dozen past studies to examine indoor insecticides’ effects on children exposed to them. The past studies had included about 1,200 children with cancer.

Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil reduces breast cancer risk

A recent study has suggested that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil appreciably reduces the risk of breast cancer. Live Science reported that researchers from the University of Navarra have discovered that women, following a Mediterranean diet were 68% less likely to develop breast cancer.

Mediterranean diet is known for its abundance of plant foods, fish and particularly olive oil. In a statement, researcher Dr. Miguel Angel Martinez-Gonzalez said, “All this despite the fact that the control group, or comparison group, followed an already healthy diet, which suggests that results could have been even more significant had it been compared to dietary pattern as followed in non-Mediterranean Western countries”.

Michigan resident tests positive for Bubonic plague

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) said in a statement that an unidentified Marquette, Michigan, resident has contracted bubonic plague. It is the first time that a Michigan resident has contracted the bubonic plague.

The patient has recently travelled to an area of Colorado in which the plague was earlier been reported. An unidentified person died from the plague in Pueblo County, Colorado in early August and the case was the first in the county since 2004.

The Pueblo City-County Health Department said that it was believed that the person contracted the plague from fleas on a dead animal as a dead prairie dog in Turkey Creek in Pueblo County was tested positive for the plague.

Burning the world’s entire coal, oil and gas would melt the whole Antarctic ice-sheet, causing the oceans to rise by more than 50m.

Ricarda Winkelmann, at the Postdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, who led the research, said it is the first time they have seen that there is enough fossil fuel to melt all of Antarctica.
