Islamabad, Dec.1: A five-member delegation of the US Senators called on President Pervez Musharraf yesterday at his camp office here and discussed prevailing political and human rights situation in Pakistan.

Musharraf reportedly gave his perspective of the political situation in the country, progress towards democracy, general elections, Pak-US relationship and measures taken to curb terrorism.

Officials said Musharraf informed US senators that he had fulfilled his promises and started working as a civilian president, but it does not affect the Pak-US relationship and the cooperation on the war on terror.

He took them into confidence about imposition of emergency and said that some elements were creating hurdles in democratic process but now situation is improving and state of emergency and PCO would be lifted on December 16.

For elections, the president said that general election would be held on January 8 for which equal opportunities provided to all political parties. An official Press release said the senators welcomed President Musharraf's decision of doffing uniform and termed this a positive sign. They also appreciated the announcement of lifting emergency and end of PCO on December 16. (ANI)
