Amman- Jordan and South Korea on Thursday initialed an agreement on nuclear cooperation for peaceful purposes.

The accord was signed by the Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) Khalid Touqan and the South Korean ambassador in Amman Bongkil Shin.

Touqan said that the deal would be officially signed in Seoul in December.

The agreement provides for cooperation between the two countries in several areas such as technical assistance, site selection, design, construction and nuclear safety, he added.

A memorandum of understanding will also be signed in December between the JAEC and the Korean Electric Power Corporation that paves the ground for future cooperation in the fields of development, construction, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants, Touqan said.

In order to ease the conventional energy bill burden, Jordan has signed similar deals with the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Russia, Romania, the Czech Republic and China. (dpa)
