India Gears Up For Hockey World Cup By Employing Foreign Coaches
While a few months back the Indian Hockey Federation was in the lime light for all the wrong reasons (corruption charges against top officials), today it is in the lime light to promote Indian hockey and ensure that the Hockey World Cup is held in India.
The President of the Indian Olympic Association sensing the need to pay more attention towards hockey has stated that seven Foreign coaches have been short listed for the men's hockey team.
The names have been sent for selection to the coaching advisor of the world body International Hockey Federation (FIH), Tayyab Ikram.Quoting “One need coaches of the highest level.Ikram "One needs standard coaches at the highest level. If you look at the coaches of other countries they have expertise, which is a minimum criterion for hiring coaches. You need a driver for the bus".
Expressing concern over the deteriorating situation of Indian Hockey The President of the Indian Olympic Association Kalmadi said a list of initiatives for reviving the National sport through their project "Promoting Indian Hockey” have been put in place. The FIH and IOA are working in accordance to finalize a coach.
The FIH president Els Van Breda Vriesman also showed a lot of interest in taking hockey to its original place "We will give all the support India needs to become a superpower in hockey again.
The FIH acknowledges the fact that this country is one of the few in the world that has produced many class players over the years. The 2010 Hockey World Cup will be held in India. It presents an opportunity to boost the game in the country".
Vriesman stated that an event management agency must manage the Hockey World Cup and the burden be shifted away from the shoulders of the 2010 Commonwealth Games Committee.
The World Cup will be "a good curtain raiser for the Commonwealth Games" IHF.
Kalmadi on his part is all geared up for the big event. and said "I had to step in because the World Cup was slipping away, but things are being worked out” Let us hope for all our sakes that Indian Hockey improves and is able to achieve a respectable stature by 2010.
